GTA III story progression moves through Portland, Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale while some mission-giver branches overlap.

GTA III does not always present its story as one perfectly linear list. Several mission-giver branches overlap, and a few later missions can make earlier optional story work unavailable. The safest way to play is to finish a character's available missions before advancing a plot event that clearly removes or turns against that character.

Portland mission progression

The opening chapter introduces Claude, 8-Ball and the Leone family network. After the introductory escape, work begins around Luigi's club, Joey Leone's garage, Toni Cipriani and eventually Salvatore Leone.

Mission giverKey missions / arc
LuigiLuigi's Girls, Don't Spank Ma Bitch Up, Drive Misty For Me, Pump-Action Pimp, The Fuzz Ball
JoeyMike Lips Last Lunch, Farewell 'Chunky' Lee Chong, Van Heist, Cipriani's Chauffeur, Dead Skunk in the Trunk, The Getaway
ToniTaking Out the Laundry, The Pick-Up, Salvatore's Called a Meeting, Triads and Tribulations, Blow Fish
SalvatoreChaperone, Cutting the Grass, Bomb Da Base, Last Requests

Planning tip: finish remaining Luigi and Joey work before pushing too far into the Salvatore line. GTA III contains missable progression if certain story branches are left unfinished.

Staunton Island mission progression

After Portland, the story opens around Asuka Kasen and the Yakuza, then expands into Kenji Kasen, corrupt police officer Ray Machowski and Donald Love. These branches can overlap, so completion-focused players should clear a mission giver before accepting a later job that targets that person.

Mission giverKey missions / arc
AsukaSayonara Salvatore, Under Surveillance, Paparazzi Purge, Payday For Ray, Two-Faced Tanner
KenjiKanbu Bust-Out, Grand Theft Auto, Deal Steal, Shima, Smack Down
RaySilence the Sneak, Arms Shortage, Evidence Dash, Gone Fishing, Plaster Blaster
Donald LoveLiberator, Waka-Gashira Wipeout!, A Drop in the Ocean, Grand Theft Aero, Escort Service, Decoy, Love's Disappearance

Important missable mission warning

For a completion run, do not treat every new icon as harmless. Waka-Gashira Wipeout! changes Kenji's status, so complete Kenji's mission line first. Likewise, finish Asuka's Two-Faced Tanner before progressing too far through Donald Love's later work.

A conservative rule works well: when multiple character icons are available, finish the older character's current chain before starting a mission whose description obviously attacks, betrays or removes that character.

Shoreside Vale and late-game missions

The late game sends Claude into Shoreside Vale, Francis International Airport and Colombian Cartel territory. Donald Love's airport-related work opens the final phase, while Asuka's later tasks focus on breaking the Cartel's operations.

Key late-game missions include Bait, Espresso-2-Go!, S.A.M. and the final confrontation, The Exchange. By this stage the player benefits greatly from knowing airport access roads, safe routes through hostile gang areas and the location of armor/weapons.

Treat each island as a progression chapter, but remember that some mission-giver lines can be active at the same time.

Pay phone missions

GTA III also has 17 pay-phone missions across the city. The major phone contacts are Marty Chonks and El Burro in Portland, King Courtney on Staunton Island, and D-Ice in Shoreside Vale.

These missions matter for a full completion run. Some phone content is easy to overlook because it does not feel like the main story and may not remain visually prominent once you are focused on later islands.

Mission order for a 100% run

  1. On Portland, finish available Luigi, Joey, Toni and phone work before advancing past major Leone story turns.
  2. Complete Portland vehicle/side content early while gang hostility is manageable.
  3. On Staunton, finish Kenji before Waka-Gashira Wipeout.
  4. Finish Two-Faced Tanner before later Donald Love progression.
  5. Keep pay-phone missions, RC missions and off-road challenges on a checklist rather than assuming the story will lead you to all of them.
  6. Before the finale, compare Stats against a 100% completion checklist.

Why mission counts differ between guides

You may see different totals online because some guides count introductory/finale wrappers differently or separate phone missions from “story missions.” For practical completion, the safer approach is not to chase one headline number. Complete every named mission-giver chain, all phone missions and all required side activities, then verify Stats.

Browser-specific mission advice

If a mission feels physics-sensitive or timing feels wrong in the WebAssembly build, lower the FPS limit to 30 and retry from a clean mission start. Do not immediately assume the mission script is broken when the browser is running far above a stable frame target.

Original-game focus: This guide is written for the classic GTA III/re3-style game. Definitive Edition and other ports can change controls, spawns, achievements or presentation.
